What You Can Do to Reduce Your Risk
Take action to reduce risk by adopting healthy habits and getting regular screenings.
• Stay at a healthy weight and get regular
physical activity
• Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol intake
• Eat healthy with plenty of fruits & vegetables
• Know yourself, family history and your risks
Regular Screenings
For age 20–39
• Have a breast exam by your doctor
or nurse every 3 years
• Report changes in your breast right away
For age 40 or older:
• Yearly mammograms
• Yearly breast exams by your doctor or nurse
• Report changes in your breast right away
• Self-exams are a good option for finding changes
Talk with your health care team about these risk factors:
• Hormone and estrogen therapy
• Breastfeeding
• Alcohol
Signs & Symptoms
The most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. Common symptoms are:
• Swelling of all or par t of a breast
• Skin irritation or dimpling
• Breast or nipple pain
• Nipple retraction (turning inward)
• Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin
• A nipple discharge other than breast milk Sometimes breast cancer can be detected first in the lymph nodes under the arm or
around the collar bone. Swollen lymph nodes should also be reported to your doctor.
Did You Know…
• A breast exam should be done at least every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s, and yearly for women 40 and older.
• Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report changes to a doctor right away.
• Beginning in their 20s, women should know the benefits of a breast self-exam (BSE) and star t self exams at home.
• Most women with one or more risk factors never develop the disease, while many women with breast cancer have no apparent risk factors.
• Early detection saves thousands of lives each year, and can improve chances of diagnosis at an early stage and successful
treatment.
• Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you age.
• Family history of cancer can increase your risk—however, 85% of women who get breast cancer do not have a family history this disease.
